Field flatteners/reducers are essential accessories for reducing the field curvature, chromatic aberration and coma inherent in many optical designs. For visual astronomy, these issues are not as important, but if you want to do deep sky astrophotography, you'll need a flat field. Be sure to select the appropriate flattener/reducer for your particular telescope.
