The QHY 533M is a brand new cooled mono deep sky camera with zero amp glow and low noise. It contains the Sony IMX533 back-illuminated sensor with exceptional low light capabilities. The pixels measure 3.76µm, making this camera ideal for short-medium focal length telescopes.

This camera has a two-stage TEC cooling system that brings the temperature of the sensor around -35C° below ambient for low noise imaging, even in warm climates. The dark current at -20°C is only 0.0005 electrons/pixel. In addition, QHY employs a unique thermal noise control technology to reduce CMOS sensor noise to a very low value without affecting the integrity of the raw image.

The QHY 533M employs a full anti-dew technology for both CCD sensor cover glass and the sensor chamber optical window.

The 1GB DDR3 memory buffer facilitates the download of images to the computer, especially when USB traffic is high, the writing speed of your computer is slow or occupied in other processes.

In order to avoid halos around bright stars, the QHY 533M has an AR coated optical window on both sides rather than the common IR/UV cut window. Also, the protection glass of the sensor is AR coated to maximize light transmission and minimize internal reflections. It is recommended to use a UV/IR cut filter.

Note: This camera may not be supported by The Sky X. We suggest you use alternative software for image capture.

QHY has designed a number of adapter/spacer kits for the 533M for different setups:

Connection to coma corrector requiring 55mm backfocus and M48 interface with CFW3S-SR 533 version (adapter kit included with camera, CFW & OAG sold separately)

  • Desiccant Drying Tube (desiccant not included)
  • Adapter for connection to photographic tripod

No power supply is included with this camera. We recommend our 12V 5A camera power supply.

Includes Combo F kit:

  • 1 x C-mount to 1.25" barrel
  • 8 x M3 x 22 mm screws
  • 1 x M42 3 mm spacer (not threaded)
  • 1 x M42 10 mm spacer (not threaded)
  • 1 x M42 - M48 with M48 female threads - 8 mm

The QHY 533M connects to the QHY CFW3S via threads. Because of this, there is a chance that the orientation of the sensor will not be parallel to the filter wheel when the threads are fully screwed. The 533M includes an adjustment mechanism to correct this.

1. Remove the front plate from the camera.

2. Screw this adapter plate onto the filter wheel. 3. Position the camera so that the sensor is parallel to the filter wheel, then fix it in place with one screw. 5. Remove the adapter plate with camera attached and then fix the remaining screws to the camera.

      Neat mono camera

My first monochrome camera, used for narrowband imaging, has been a useful learning tool. Very clear images without any lamp glow. Initially, I had black lines but these were due to me using a 5-metre USB cable from my laptop - basically underpowered! This camera with cooler needs a full 12-13V power and a powered USB dock to have it work correctly. I now use a powered Surface Dock 2 and the images have no black lines, are crisp and clear. A fairly heavy camera but it works well, cools down quickly, and gives amazing detail in my borttle 6 suburban skies.
