The Bahtinov or focusing mask is a brilliant aid to get a perfect focus. When the telescope is pointed toward a bright star, the mask generates the typical pattern that makes the focusing procedure easy. Adjust the focus of your telescope until you will see a symmetrical pattern.

A quality little Bahtinov mask

Guide scope Bahtinov was a bit of an after-thought for me, but I eventually gave in and shopped around. Most available masks that would fit a 70mm Orion guidescope are some sort of plastic but the Testare version is metal, with metal holding pins covered in plastic. This setup suits me, in case I drop the little mask in the dark, or move the scope and it falls off (yes, I have done that with the main OTA). The scope needs to be pointing up, or the adjustable pins need to be adjusted to snugly fit the scope, much like other Bahtinovs. In the end, it is well worth the outlay to bring the guidescope to focus, and this mask is a quality design.
